Education Savings - What Resources are Available?

Updated: Sep 28, 2020

The government of Canada offers the Canada Education Savings Grant which provides 20 cents on every dollar you contribute, up to a maximum of $500 on an annual contribution of $2,500. Additional amounts of 10% and 20% on the first $500 of your contributions into an Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) are also available for children from middle- and low-income families. If you cannot make a contribution in any given year, you may be able to catch up in future years. This grant is available up until the end of the calendar year in which the child turns 17.

There is also the Canada Learning Bond (CLB) - If your child was born after 2004 they may also be eligible to receive $500 in an RESP plus addition payments of $100 per year up to age 15 (for a maximum $2000). Please note that you do not have to make any RESP contributions to receive the CLB!

Visit www.SmartSAVER.org for an online application (StartMyRESP) which includes discussion on What RESPs Offer, Choosing an RESP, and How to Use StartMyRESP .
